Postures (Asanas)

The yoga system of exercises (called 'poses', 'postures' or 'asana') include
absolutely gymnastic feats to very simple movements, all involving flexibility, strength and optimum posture in perfect balance. A set is always composed with a basic health benefit in mind, and to achieve a set of exercises suitable for the specific individual, or in context of a group, to accommodate all levels of participants.

It is vital to learn the basic principles of posture, breathing and how to go into a yoga pose before when starting a practice. An infinite variety of postures can be strung together to form sequences for specific needs and results, in line with a warm-up and flow technique. The sequences described below are examples of how to combine postures in a meaningful way. Simple programmes are, relative to the ability of the practitioner, as effective as as the more difficult poses and sets.
Note: English, rather than the Indian Sanskrit names, are used to identify the postures.

  • Basic principles - types and combinations of postures, moving into postures and good body posture

  • Sitting postures - for meditation and pranayama

  • Basic postures - the classic postures

  • Sequences - short 5 minute sets

  • Sets and Sessions - longer sets

  • Remedial - a softer, healing approach to injured or handicapped individuals
